Vegas - You big awesomely plastic place you

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.  Well, I figured I better bite the bullet on the internet charge in my room and give a blog update.  It’s not the kinda place you want to go off the radar for a few days, and I’m sure a few of you are wondering how the last few days have been.   So I had a long day of flying on Monday, Boston to Chicago was about two hours and then I had an hour and a half wait here before a four hour flight to Vegas.  There is a two hour time difference from the east coast so it was about 3.30pm when I arrived.  On the flight from Chicago to Vegas I sat next to an old retired couple.  The man was 76 years old, they were from long island and he was a classic New Yorkian.  Fantastic accent and a real hard case, at one stage he said,” My  ass is sore from sitting in this seat, I’ve been sitting here so long I have flat spots on my balls” (With the accent this was hilarious).  He was great company along the way.

As soon as you step off the plane you are confronted by slot machines, it is absolutely crazy.  They are all through the airport, you can play slots while you wait for your bag at the carousel as well.   So I avoided them got my bag and jumped in a taxi to my hotel; Hooters Hotel & Casino.   It’s not too bad here.  I have a nice large room with a huge bed and air con, so it is a step up from Boston in that way.   It was only about $25 a night plus resort fees so a pretty good deal.  It is located across from the MGM Grand, just off the strip.   Anyway, I dropped my bags off, got changed and went to check out Vegas.  It is an eye popping place, you can’t really describe it, it is bright lights, over the top buildings and displays.  I went straight to the New York, New York casino.  The exterior is made to look like the New York skyline and the interior is decorated with New York scenes as well.  I went and found the rollercoaster that they have and purchased a day pass.  It is such an awesome ride, I rode it four times in a row!!   So my first hour or so in Vegas was throwing myself about on  a rollercoaster in the blazing heat of the desert.  Good times.  The temperature here over the last  couple of days has been 110 degrees fahrenheit which is about 44 degrees Celsius.  Very Hot.
I then walked up the strip and found a half-price ticket booth.  I ended up buying a ticket to see Penn & Teller later in the evening.   So I did the usual Vegas thing, took lots of photos of the crazy sights everywhere, watched the Bellagio Fountains – which are incredible, and the jumped on a free shuttle over to the Rio casino, which is where the show was on.  It was an awesome show – very clever – and they explain a lot of the tricks and take the piss out of magicians that claim to be psychics which I thought was fantastic. After the show I got the shuttle back to Bally’s casino and then walked back to the New York New York to get a night ride on the rollercoaster in before heading to bed, which I did.  There are drunken people all over the streets, amongst families and children, you hear grumpy parents all over the place whom I assume are either pissed off about the heat or have lost money during the day.  Woman in glitter and tiny skirts, and the smell of cheap stripper perfume wafting in the air.  The sights and sounds of Vegas are truly something else.  I got home at around 12.30am and retired to bed.  In the morning I went and had a cooked breakfast in the hotel, that I had a coupon for, I then went for a wander down the strip.   I went to Mandalay Bay Casino and checked out the Shark exhibit that they have.  I walked through a couple of other casinos and took some more photos and then looked at the lion enclosure at the MGM.  At this stage it was around midday and it was very, hot.  I went back to Hooters and decided to hang out at the pool.  I spent the afternoon, swimming and lounging around and then went up to my room to get changed before having a few beers at the bar beside the pool.   My intention for the evening was to have a couple of drinks and then go down to Freemont Street to see the old casino area and look at the roof top display that they have, and also go to Treasure Island and see the pirates & Sirens show.  However, I had a few drinks and meet a few people, ended up having some chicken wings that I also had a voucher for and was back in my room and asleep by 9pm.  Ha Ha the combination of the heat, sun and drinking really took it out of me – but I had a fantastic sleep and feel great this morning.  I have another day and a half in Vegas so I think I will go shopping and check out the things I wanted to see last night.  The weather forecast has just popped up on morning television, and they are saying today will be the hottest day of summer and they are releasing an extreme heat warning.  It is going to be 111 degrees.  So I better make sure I have plenty of water.  So that is Vegas thus far – lots and lots of photos and stories to share, so I look forward to doing that when I get home.  Stay well everyone, sorry for not having a blog for a couple of days, but will write another update at the end of today.  I’m safe and sound.  Hope you are all tickidy boo – much love. Dan.
